The motherboard manufacturers have done a great job at making these dual processor designs as popular and easy to use as possible, so everyone should have a good option at the gaming table.
For the most part, gaming on dual processor systems is still pretty much the same as it is on single processor systems. However, a few new features have been added to the motherboard design to help make it more interesting. Most notably, dual processors can now be used to play games that haven’t been optimized for single-processor systems. Even though the AMD Opteron platform is a bit slower than a dual-processor motherboard, it’s a faster processor than a dual-processor motherboard, which means that you can play a single-processor game on a dual-processor motherboard. This makes it a great choice if you want to play games that are not optimized for either architecture, like the Unreal Engine, or the new title, Battlefield 3, where you can play both on dual-processor systems and single-processor systems.
There are games that do not work on the AMD Opteron platform that are still playable on a dual-processor motherboard. For example, the recently released Battlefield 3: Dual Shock 4 on the original PlayStation, and its upcoming sequel, Battlefield 3: Ghosts of Anera on the Xbox 360.

To get a little more specific, the motherboard for Dual-Core AMD CPUs and Intel Dual-CPU motherboards uses a “Dual-Processor” chipset, which is basically a dual-core CPU plus a dual-port RAM module. Intel is releasing their own dual-processors based on the same chip on their next-gen CPUs. The Dual-Core (or “quad-core”) processor is basically an “SMP” chip, which stands for single, multiple and peak performance.
So what makes a good dual-processor motherboard? Essentially, it’s a chipset that supports two different processors on it so that the motherboard can really give you the best of both worlds. If you have two of these in an SMP configuration, then you’ll have twice the number of cores, twice the number of I/O ports and twice the amount of RAM installed.
I know a lot of gamers are all about the SMP configuration, but I have to wonder if its really so much of a deal. I know its not much faster, but I can say with confidence that the amount of power and bandwidth you get from a dual-processor motherboard is way better than one processor and a single SMP card.
